چکیده

The ability to compare the performance of various NFS file server configurations from several vendors is critically important to a computing facility when selecting an NFS file server. To date, nhfsstone has been a popular means of characterizing NFS file server performance. However, several deficiencies have been found in nhfsstone. The LADDIS NFS file server benchmark has been developed to resolve nhfsstone’s shortcomings and provide new functionality. The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) released the System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0 benchmark suite, which contains 097.LADDIS, as an industry-standard file server benchmark in April 1993. This paper describes the major technical issues involved in developing the benchmark and the rationale used to establish default 097.LADDIS workload parameter values. Where appropriate, areas for further research are identified and encouraged. Permission has been granted by the USENIX Association to reprint the above paper/article. Fast Consistency Checking for the Solaris File System

Our Netra NFS group at Sun set out to solve the challenging problem of providing remote Network File System (NFS) service with high performance and availability. An NFS server must guarantee the permanence of changes to the file system before acknowledging an NFS request. Thus, the server’s underlying local file system must perform update operations synchronously to stable storage with potentia...

The Advancement of NFS Benchmarking: SFS 2.0

With the release of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation’s (SPEC) System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0 benchmark suite in April 1993, the characterization of NFS server performance grew from a small and not widely accepted set of benchmarks, to a single industry standard benchmark. This paper will provide a historical look at the success of SFS 1.01 and how it has driven server capab...

An NFS Trace Player for File System Evaluation

File access traces have been used to drive simulations of storage management algorithms such as file caching, for workload characterization and modeling, and to identify interesting access patterns for performance optimization. Surprisingly they are rarely used to test the correctness and evaluate the performance of an actual file system or server. The main reason is that up until now there did...

Cutting Corners: Workbench Automation for Server Benchmarking

A common approach to benchmarking a server is to measure its behavior under load from a workload generator. Often a set of such experiments is required— perhaps with different server configurations or workload parameters—to obtain a statistically sound result for a given benchmarking objective. This paper explores a framework and policies to conduct such benchmarking activities automatically an...

Bigfoot - NFS : A Parallel File - Striping NFS Server ( Extended

Bigfoot-NFS allows the transparent use of the aggregate space of multiple NFS file servers as a single file system. By presenting a single apparent file system to the user, Bigfoot-NFS allows the use of available storage without the maintenance overhead of tracking multiple mounted file systems. Unlike most other network parallel file systems, Bigfoot-NFS runs without a central “metadata” serve...
